SETH PUTNAM

MAY 15, 1968 - JUNE 11, 2011

Anal Cunt was clearly an attempt to craft a band name

that was as offensive and disgusting as possible.

Even with many of their albums labeled merely as "A.C.", record stores that still decided to carry their albums

were a living example of the joke coming full circle.

Although there are some grindcore bands

that can legitimately be called true "music",

with somewhat complex instrumentation,

many grindcore projects are just one or two guys

with a drum machine and a vocalist.

I believe that the true draw of grindcore typically

isn't the music itself, but the lyrics and the aesthetic.

I believe truly good grindcore is usually funny

or shocking in some way, and a grindcore band

that takes themselves too seriously is doing it wrong,

in my opinion.

Seth Putnam and Anal Cunt understood this.

Scott Hull, another grindcore legend

of Pig Destroyer and Agoraphobic Nosebleed fame,

was even briefly involved with the band.

With song titles like "Everyone in Anal Cunt is Dumb",

"I Just Saw the Gayest Guy on Earth", and

"Living Colour is my Favorite Black Metal Band",

the highlight of Anal Cunt releases is the humor.

Grindcore definitely isn't for everybody.

Just like Cannibal Corpse and GG Allin aren't for everyone.

But if you want a good laugh and songs

that poke fun at the underground music scene,

Anal Cunt is definitely worth a listen.

With most songs being less than a minute long,

the song titles and lyrics are really a gold mine.

If you're an underground music nerd like me,

you can spend hours going through the various inside jokes found in the Anal Cunt discography.

A lot of the jokes found in their music are extremely

specific to the metal and grindcore scene.

For example, the song

"Stealing Seth's Ideas' The New Book By Jon Chang"

is poking fun at the frontman for Discordance Axis,

the New Jersey grindcore band that was active during

much of the same time that Anal Cunt was a band.

During their history from 1988-2011,

Anal Cunt managed to make fun of so many famous people, minor celebrities, musicians, and random people

that Seth Putnam would run into on a daily basis,

it's pretty impressive.

Another funny reference from their 1996 album

"40 More Reasons to Hate Us" is the song

'Johnny Violent Getting His Ass Kicked By Morrisey',

a jab at the frontman of the London

techno group Ultraviolence.

I could probably write a book unpacking

all of the references found within the Anal Cunt catalog,

but I will leave that to you, the reader.

It's really a shame that Seth Putnam

died at the young age of 43,

and some would say that it's a shame

he spent so much time writing music

that was silly and ridiculous.

If Putnam had wanted to,

he probably could have written "serious" songs

and sold more records

and maybe gotten more mainstream attention.

But I think Putnam was doing what he was meant to do.

And his legacy lives on every time

a guy sits down with a drum machine, a guitar,

and a tape recorder to make music for the small

"community within a community" known as grindcore.

Rest in power you beauful s.o.b.
