ANAL CUNT
THE OLD TESTAMENT: 1988-1991
The following is a collection of all the official releases,
as well as some unreleased recordings
from the first 2 Anal Cunt line-ups from 1988-1991.
Anal Cunt formed in March 1988 with the line-up of
Seth Putnam (vocals), Mike Mahan (guitar), and Tim Morse (drums). This line-up lasted until April 20, 1990,
when Anal Cunt broke up until March 1991,
reforming with new guitarist, Fred Ordonez.
The recordings from 1988 to 1991
represent the older Anal Cunt sound.
When the band started, the goal was to be
the fastest, noisiest, shittiest band around and to have absolutely no trace of musicality at all - no lyrics,
no song titles, no music written for the songs,
and all the songs were between a half second long
to 5 seconds long. Over time, that got boring,
so some musical parts were added here and there.
The original Anal Cunt influenced countless other bands,
and was the only band in its genre
that actually toured and played out regularly.
For the first disc on this 2-CD set,
it is the fourth time it's been repressed.
Originally, Ecocentric Records released it as Fast Boston H.C.
They pressed 1,000 copies with a cheap cardboard cover.
The second pressing of 1,000 had the title
I originally wanted, Greatest Hits - Part 1,
and had a jewel case with a better insert.
The outtakes for both Fast Boston H.C.
and Greatest Hits - Part 1
were taken from the 5,643 Song E.P.
The first seven tracks of the second disc
have been released three times now.
They were originally released as Old Stuff- Part 2
with 2,000 CDs pressed.
Later, they were first put together on a 2-CD set called
The Early Years: 1988-1991.
The outtakes for The Early Years: 1988-1991
were taken from Another E.P.
Each CD has had something different on it,
so you collector types have some reason to get them all.
This 2-CD set beats them all because it includes
our 1st demo from April 1988, along with our final session
from 1991, none of which anyone has ever heard.
Anyways, here is what's on this set...
DISC ONE
Track 1: 1st Demo
This was the first recording Anal Cunt ever did,
back in April 1988. Until now, no one has ever heard this, including the band members.
It was recorded in my mother's attic
and the only other people besides the band members
that were there were these two broads
who were loitering around while we were recording it.
It was recorded on an old 4-track recorder and wasn't mixed until March 22, 2011, by me and Ken Cmar.
People have been asking me for a copy of this for years,
and I have refused until now. Enjoy.
Track 2: 47 Song Demo
This was recorded on August 22, 1988
on my parents' stereo in their living room.
It is the 2nd demo we recorded.
We recorded the 47 Song Demo so we would have
something to sell on our first U.S. tour
which was starting 4 days later.
I was actually able to book a tour without any material out
by lying to the clubs and saying we had an album coming out around the time we would be there...
that took us as far as Florida.
Only 30 copies of the demo were actually made.
Track 3 & 4: 88 Song E.P.
This was our first record and it was recorded
on November 22, 1988 by Marc Lindahl
at BF/VF Studios (Boston); mixed by Marc and myself.
Though we pressed 1,012 copies on my label,
Wicked Sick Records, a few ended up getting damaged
in shipping, so there are a little less than 1,000 copies
floating around, all on black vinyl.
Another 1,000 copies were later repressed
on Fudgeworthy Records.
On the original pressing, the last song on Side B
("Guy Lombardo") got cut off at the end
because we were worried that it would be too long for a 7".
On this 2-CD set, you get the whole version.
The intro was taken from a show we played at the
Electric Banana in Pittsburgh on August 31, 1988.
The owner of the club is the guy announcing us.
Track 5: Live in Indiana - February 20, 1989
These are some live songs taken from a show we played
in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1989 in Dino's
(from the defunct band, Transgression) parents' Garage.
We were supposed to play a show
with Neurosis and Transgression at a regular club,
but the club's roof caved in a week earlier.
We still wanted to play in Indianapolis,
so we drove 1,000 miles to play a free show
in Dino's garage and we hung out there for a week.
We drove to Pittsburgh to do a show,
and then back to Indianapolis to play another free show
in someone else's basement.
Track 6: A.C. Side of Split 7"
with Seven Minutes of Nausea
This was our second vinyl release and was recorded
by Marc Lindahl on May 29, 1989 at BF/VF Studios (Boston), and mixed by Marc and myself.
There were 1,000 of these pressed on
Total Noise Tapes and Records from Germany.
This helped us get a lot of exposure in Europe.
Out of the original line-up's recordings,
this is Mike's favorite and Tim's and my least favorite.
Track 7: A.C. Songs from
Apocalyptic Convulsions 10" (Compilation)
This was recorded the same day as our split with
Seven Minutes of Nausea.
Some of the vocals were re-recorded on June 10, 1991.
Track 8 & 9: 5,643 Song E.P.
This record is basically 16 Anal Cunt songs
playing at the same time.
The idea for this came from me and Marc Lindhal
one night while hanging out at his place.
Before we were able to record it, Marc moved to New York,
so this fucking retard asshole, Tom Waltz,
had taken over the studio.
So basically, we went to a 16-track studio
and had the guitar, drums, and vocals
recorded live onto one track
until we did a whole 7" worth of material.
Then we did the same with the second track,
third track, etc., until we had 16 tracks done.
There is actually over 3 hours worth of music on this 7".
It took forever to record (20 hours).
Plus we had to put up with some stupid cunt
who lived above the studio
who constantly complained about the noise.
Even worse was that the guy recording it
was a slow fucking loser who was trying to read the sports section of the newspaper while we were recording.
We'd usually do a few songs in a row,
which would be about 30 seconds total and then stop.
Then he would slowly, like a crippled retard,
realize that we stopped and slowly reach
to press stop on the control board.
We actually recorded what turned out to be Side 2 first
on September 23 and 24, 1989.
I was mad at how much space he left between songs,
so when we did what turned out to be Side 1
on October 1, 1989,
I was constantly giving him shit about stopping the tape
as soon as we finished the songs.
Since recording this was so long and tedious,
we would fuck around now and then
and do a few cover songs (which no one can notice anyways). We did songs by Nunslaughter, Fear of God,
Cheech and Chong, and others I can't remember.
I thought of the piano intro while I was taking a shit
right before we recorded.
I originally pressed 307 copies of this on my label,
Wicked Sick Records.
A little over 100 were on yellow vinyl
and a little over 200 were on red vinyl.
Also, 50 of the copies had a full color cover.
I did such a small pressing because I didn't think
I could sell too many copies of a record
that sounded like complete garbage.
Plus, I only wanted people that heard Anal Cunt before
to hear it because I didn't want people to think
all of our records were songs playing over each other.
Shortly after it came out, it was licensed to
Total Noise Tapes and Records.
They pressed 1,100 copies on six different colored vinyl.
I thought the guy there was out of his mind
for pressing that many, but they all sold.
The only thing that sucked was that he made his own cover
for the record without telling me.
It looks like a 5-year-old kid drew a bad porno picture.
I was totally embarrassed when I saw it.
Track 10 & 11: Another E.P.
This was recorded on January 20, 1990
on a cassette recorder in my mother's attic.
We were sick of the band and wanted to record
our last practice for a record and then break up.
Six hours later, we reformed because
we wanted to play in Europe before we broke up.
This is me and Tim's favorite of the original line-up recordings. 500 were pressed, but 50 got destroyed in the mail.
They are on yellow vinyl.
Track 12: Live in Schwäbisch Hall,
Germany - April 3, 1990
This is part of the first show of our first European tour.
There is also a bootleg split 7" (with Patareni, of course)
with part of the show made by the guitarist of Patareni.
The whole show was the longest one
we had played up until that point (40 minutes;
our shows were usually 8-15 minutes back then).
The asshole from Patareni only gave us
three copies of the record.
Track 13: Live in Berlin,
Germany - April 20, 1990
This is the last show by the original line-up.
We were supposed to play in East Berlin
(when it was still East Germany) the next day,
but we didn't get to play because it was an outdoor show,
and it started raining heavily
and the wind knocked the P.A. over.
So that's it for the original line-up of Mike, Tim, and me.
The next CD has Fred Ordonez on guitar
for the first seven tracks and I'm on guitar for tracks 8 - 13.
DISC TWO
Track 1: A.C. Side of Split 7" with Meatshits
This was recorded on May 11, 1991
on a 4-track in my mother's attic.
I originally put it out on my own label, Wicked Sick Records. 1,000 copies were pressed on black vinyl.
Another 1,000 copies were later repressed
on Fudgeworthy Records. This CD contains songs
not on the original pressing of the 7".
Track 2: A.C. Side of Split 7" with Psycho
This was also recorded on May 11, 1991
on a 4-track in my mother's attic.
This originally came out on Ax/ction Records.
The first 1,000 were on splatter vinyl,
and the second 1,000 were on yellow vinyl
with some red dots or something on it.
Track 3: A.C. Songs from
the Master of Noise 12" (Compilation)
This was also recorded May 11, 1991
on a 4-track in my mother's attic.
This is the only record that we ever made
that was completely filler material.
There were 1,000 of these pressed
on S.O.A. Records from Italy.
The asshole that put this out never sent us any copies,
so I had to buy copies from someone else.
He also had the nerve, after not sending us any copies,
to put out an ad that said,
"Bands Who I Haven't Talked to About It,
But I Want to Put Out a Record By,"
and mentioned wanting to put out
a full-length Anal Cunt L.P. Fuck off, Paolo!!!
Track 4: Side One of Unplugged E.P.
This was recorded May 12, 1991
on a 4-track in my mother's attic.
We would have recorded it the day before,
when we did the other shit, but we used all the electric
outlets and didn't have any other extension cords.
We didn't have any lights, so when the sun went down,
we couldn't see anything...so we did it the next day.
All 500 copies were pressed on
Psychomania Records from Scotland.
Both Tracks 4 and 5 on this CD
contain songs not on the original 7".
Track 5: Side Two of Unplugged E.P.
This was recorded in some hippie guy's house
in Austin, Texas, on July 9, 1991.
We had a day off on tour and some kids said
we could do a show at this guy's house. When we got there, there weren't any microphones or a P.A.,
so I asked if he had an acoustic guitar
(I figured he would since he was a hippie).
So, we did an unplugged set on his living room floor
with everyone (all 12 people) sitting around us in a circle.
This is an actual "true" acoustic show: only drums,
acoustic guitar, and I screamed without a microphone.
Track 6: Side One of Live E.P.
This is from a live show in Houston, Texas on July 6, 1991, while on tour with Phlegm and Incantation.
Splattereah and Soilent Green also played at the show.
This record came out on Psychomania Records
and 1,000 copies were pressed. Both Tracks 6 and 7
on this CD contain songs not on the original 7".
Track 7: Side Two of Live E.P.
This was recorded on July 13, 1991 in Ybor City, FL.
This was the last show of the U.S. tour.
Unreleased Session - 1991
The following six songs are from a rare, unreleased session
me and Tim recorded ourselves in late 1991.
I played guitar and Tim did drums.
No one has ever heard this stuff before,
so we decided to include it on this repressing for you.
This is the last recording we did
before we recorded Morbid Florist.
On this CD, "Precursor to Song #6 (Instrumental)"
has a lot of the same parts as "Song #6,"
and "Song #5" got re-recorded when we did Morbid Florist.
The original intent of this recording was
for me and Tim to do the basic tracks,
and have Fred add his guitar tracks later
(which never happened).
These were supposed to become the "real" songs
on a CD which never came out.
We signed a deal with this label,
but we ended up blowing them off
because they never sent us the money for the recording.
I recorded the vocals in March of 2011.
Track 8: "Riverbottom Nightmare Band"
For those who don't know, this is a cover version
of a song from a Muppet TV special called,
Emmet Otter's Jug Band Christmas.
In true Muppet style, their movies typically have at least
one heavy song, surrounded by a bunch of gay songs.
The bad guys of this movie, a bunch of ruffians
from the town of Riverbottom,
perform this song under the name, The Nightmare,
during a battle of the bands.
When I first heard their song as a kid,
I thought it was really heavy.
Then during Christmas of 1989, I watched the movie,
sitting through all the boring gay parts
just to hear this song again.
That night, I rewrote the song from memory for Anal Cunt,
and we recorded it on a boom box
for Another E.P. in January of 1990.
When we recorded these six songs,
we decided to do a good studio version of it.
Track 9: "Boy George"
This song was going through my head constantly
the day that Boy George was playing in Boston...
it's this basic heavy riff with the words "BOY GEORGE"
growled over and over again.
I was so psyched; it was all I could think about all day
until I got to the show. Then from the front row,
I was screaming "BOY GEORGE" in the same voice
right in his face. He seemed kinda frightened.
I was in the front row most of the show,
until I went up to the balcony to fuck this girl I was with.
I'm pretty convinced that we were
the only two non-gay people
out of about 200 gay guys at the show.
This was at the lowest point of Boy George's career,
before he made a comeback with the song,
"The Crying Game." I had an awesome time at the show,
and I got a cool shirt that I'm wearing
in one of the photos on this CD set.
Track 10: "Anal Cunt Theme Song (Instrumental)"
This song was basically supposed to be our theme song (whatever that means).
Track 11: "Even Newest H.C. Song #1"
This is basically a fast hardcore song
written in the vein of old Gang Green and Jerry's Kids.
The lyrics are about some trendy poser type
who is always trying to fit in with everyone.
I've recently been rehearsing this song
with different lyrics for a song called, "Throw it Off,"
with my hardcore band, You're Fired.
Track 12: "Precursor to Song #6 (Instrumental)"
The intro to this song ended up getting used
on the Anal Cunt song, "Song #9 (Instrumental),"
on the Top 40 Hits CD,
and everything from the third part on
became the second half of "Song #6" on Morbid Florist.
I never wrote words for this.
Track 13: "Song #5"
This is the original recording of "Song #5,"
which I think is the best out of all three,
including the later versions featured on
Morbid Florist and Everyone Should Be Killed.
The piano on it sounds great, which is mostly me
banging on all the low notes with my fist.
Unlike the later versions, I also played piano
along with some of the guitar chords.
The lyrics are about generic girl problems.
Another one of my bands, Full Blown A.I.D.S.,
has been rehearsing this song under a different name.
Well that's it for now.
Relapse has the rights to all this for seven years,
so this might get re-released on some other label
with even newer unreleased shit I might dig up.
Who knows. I hope you enjoy this.
This goes out to all our fans who have been there
since this shit was originally recorded,
and to all the new fans who weren't even born yet then.
Bye,
Seth Putnam

EPILOGUE
"I joined A.C. as a misfit kid,
and although we didn't realize it then,
A.C. was tailor made for misfits.
I had only met him once before when Seth called me
in 1988 and asked if I wanted to join his band.
I asked what we were going to sound like and he said, "Complete noise...and we're only going to play one show." When I asked what we were going to call it, he said,
"Well, um...Anal Cunt." I said, "Let's do it."
The releases this year have turned out to be far
more important than anyone ever could have imagined.
They officially mark the end of Anal Cunt, forever.
Any notions of his band moving forward without Seth
are simply sacrilege.
The band he started 23 years ago became our lives.
And as we all know, all things including lives...must end.
But as a memorial to both Seth and Anal Cunt, we are
all blessed to have had experiences as amazing as this.
Recently, after what would be our last practice together,
Seth and I were drinking some beer and just talking about
what we had done over the years;
what the band might do in the future.
But mostly we talked about how happy we were
to be doing what we were doing again.
Seth smiled and said to me, "Tim! This is just like '91 again!"
Ultimately, everything we created together was great
in some way because of the connection we had...
because of our friendship.
